After a year and a half of updates every single month for Sea of Thieves, Rare has announced that changes are on the way. New content and more ways to play are still coming, but from January 2021 they just do not come as often.
In its latest video update – which you can see at the top of the article – the developer explains that Sea of Thieves is moving to a seasonal solution. Each season is scheduled to last for about three months. All will introduce one big news for the game, in addition to lots of smaller events and challenges.
With the seasons also comes a completely new progression system. As so many other games have done in the past, Sea of Thieves is betting on a battle pass scheme. Each season gets a new pass with 100 levels to climb through, and heaps of rewards to unlock the more you play.
In addition to the usual battle pass trail, Rare also throws in a premium variant the developer calls Plunder Pass. You do not have to pay to access this, but the rewards consist of discounts on the purchase of certain items in the game’s Pirate Emporium shop.
Finally, Rare declared that the work with the player-against-player mode Arena has come to an end. Analyzes of the game show that most fans stick to the adventure mode, and therefore the developer has decided to concentrate exclusively on it. Those who want can still play Arena, but there will be no more news or updates to the mode.
