Sea lock in IJmuiden will not be called Sluis McSluisface but Sea lock IJmuiden | NOW

The new sea lock in IJmuiden will be called Sea lock IJmuiden, the municipality of Velsen announced on Tuesday. The name was chosen from entries such as Irma Sluis, De Sluizenmoed and Sluis McSluisface.

It was already reported that the lock would not bear the name of Irma Sluis anyway. That name was mentioned by several contributors, referring to the sign language interpreter who became nationally known through the corona press conferences. To be able to name the lock after someone, that person must have died for at least ten years or be a member of the royal family.

The name Zeesluis IJmuiden was submitted five times, a total of more than five thousand entries. The naming committee and the municipality eventually took the plunge.

Four of the winning entrants will receive a cake with the name of the lock and the one who came up with the name first can attend the official opening in 2022. The sea lock in IJmuiden will be the largest in the world.
