SEA Games Bonuses for Indonesian Athletes Make Neighboring Countries Surprised and Tempted

KOMPAS.com – The bonus for the Indonesian contingent that won the SEA Games medal surprised a number of athletes from neighboring countries. In fact, they are tempted to defend Indonesia.

This refers to the prize money given by the Indonesian government to outstanding athletes at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines. The medalists for the individual events pocketed large sums of money.

At that time, the gold medal winner received Rp. 500 million. The silver medal winners were rewarded with IDR 300 million while the bronze medalists received IDR 150 million.

Well, what about the medalists on SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam? The government has not determined the amount of the bonus, but what was done three years ago can be used as a reference.

The issue of the size of the bonus for Indonesian athletes has surprised athletes from neighboring countries. This is according to a report by the Antara news agency, who briefly spoke with a number of Southeast Asian athletes at the 2021 SEA Games.

They gave the same reaction when they learned about the bonuses received by Indonesian athletes in the 2019 SEA Games.

“Wow, they can instantly become millionaires!” said Malaysian taekwondo athlete, Jason Loo Jun Wei.

This statement is not an exaggeration because the bonus he receives is very far from the Indonesian athletes. Jason Loo, a taekwondo gold medalist in the 2019 SEA Games mixed doubles poomsae category, only earned 20,000 Malaysian ringgit (approximately IDR 66 million).

A similar nominal was received by the Filipino athlete, Jeordan Dominguez. The gold medalist in the poomsae freestyle category only receives a bonus of 300,000 pesos (approximately IDR 83 million).

“Wow, that’s a lot. Then I also want to be an Indonesian athlete,” said Dominguez.
