Regensburg. The new rescue ship Sea-Eye 4 left the Rostock shipyard on Saturday morning and set off to cross into the Mediterranean. The Regensburg organization announced this on Saturday. The rescue ship was rebuilt for six months by around 250 volunteers and prepared for its first mission. A few days ago the ship received the German flag and the German flag state administration gave the green light for operation, the message said. The arrival of the Sea-Eye 4 in Spain is planned for the end of April, from there the ship should then set off “as quickly as possible” for the first rescue mission.
“People have been dying in the Mediterranean for many years. In 2021 there will be at least 406 deaths. The departure of Sea-Eye 4 is an important signal from a broad civil society alliance to the EU member states, ”says Gorden Isler, Chairman of Sea-Eye e. V .. To drown people in the Mediterranean Sea in order to reduce the number of asylum applications in Europe and to deter others from fleeing is inhuman. This “irresponsible policy” finds no support in civil society.
Financial tailwind
According to the organization, the purchase and conversion of the rescue ship were largely made possible by United4Rescue, an alliance for civil sea rescue. A large part of the mission costs will also be borne by the alliance. The passage of the ship into the Mediterranean is financed by donations from the Catholic (arch) dioceses of Munich and Freising, Paderborn and Trier.
