Thiruvananthapuram: The Latin Catholic Church has launched an open protest against the state government by raising the problems faced by fishermen including sea attacks. Alleging that the government is neglecting the coastal people, the fishermen staged a protest march to the Secretariat under the leadership of the Sabha.
Fishing vessels including boats were brought in vehicles to protest. Motor vehicle department officials stopped the vehicles loaded with boats which led to the conflict. There was an uproar between the two sides.
Clashes also broke out in Vizhinjam, Poonthura, Petta and Poowar. The coastal people who are facing sea attacks are demanding an immediate solution. There is also a complaint that the government is not trying to solve the problems.
More than 500 boats have been destroyed in coastal areas. Fishermen have been living in camps for the past six years. The workers also demand that their rehabilitation should be implemented.
