The highly inflamed situation of the Health and Safety Committee has caused the leadership of the SDP’s parliamentary group to react. Chairman of the group Titti Tuppurainen (sd) tells Iltalehti that he has started to find out the committee’s situation.

– Everything that has been heard from the social and health committee through different channels says that the situation is worrying. These messages about the committee’s situation are alarming, Tuppurainen says.

– You can’t just follow it with your eyes, you need some kind of calming down. So far, there is still not enough information about what the real situation is in the committee, but now we have to find out.

What is concretely done when we find out?

– I don’t want to go through all the steps in public, but I would say that now in the initial phase it is a matter of discussions with the members of the social and health committee, where the situation has developed and what is now being discussed.

The opening of Merinen

The situation began to unravel on Thursday, when an SDP MP sitting on the social and health committee Ville Merinen said that he was going on sick leave because of his mother’s illness and the committee’s inflamed atmosphere.

– The alternative is to get sick with exhaustion/depression. Or face this situation face to face. Parliament, parties: the matter must change. Now fucking do something. You can’t make quality laws in an empty place, Merinen wrote on Instagram.

After that, numerous members of the committee talked about the committee’s atmosphere problems in an interview with Iltalehti. The chairman of the committee was brought up Krista Kiurun (sd) and vice president Mia Laihon (cook)role. In particular, Kiuru’s management style garnered criticism.

– It is very unfortunate that the situation has progressed so far that one member of the committee has found the situation so difficult that he has taken sick leave, Tuppurainen says.

He welcomes the MP City Meriselle (sd) a lot of strength and a speedy recovery back to parliamentary work.

Tuppurainen considers it exceptional that one member of parliament has to go on sick leave because of the atmosphere. He adds that there has been a tense atmosphere in the past as well.

– I remember, for example, from (Prime Minister Juha) Sipilä’s (Central) term, that the social and health committee – when the social security reform at the time was discussed – had a tense and burdened atmosphere.

At that time, the committee was headed by Krista Kiuru and the vice-chairman was Hannakaisa Heikkinen (center).

The vice-president also has his part

Tuppurainen says that based on what he has found out so far, the reason is not Kiurun alone.

– Based on everything that has come to our attention so far, the reason should not be looked for solely in chairman Kiurus. It could be about something else. It is good to find this out before drawing conclusions, Tuppurainen says.

He hasn’t talked to Kiuru about today’s situation yet, but he will have a conversation. He also does not comment on possible personnel changes.

Chairman of the parliamentary group of the Coalition Matias Marttinen on the other hand, in an interview with HS on Thursday, he specifically held Kiurua responsible for the situation. Tuppurainen does not accept this claim.

– The working culture and atmosphere of the committee is built on many things, and the vice-chairman also has a role in this, Tuppurainen says.

Trace Halla-aho’s responsibility

Tuppurainen says that the parliament, the speaker of the parliament and the entire presidency should support the work of one of its most important committees.

Tuppurainen connects the matter to the episode seen yesterday, where the speaker of the parliament Jussi Halla-ahon The Council of Speakers led by (ps) decided to transfer the two government proposals that normally belong to the social and health committee to two other committees for consideration.

The bills concern the hospital network and home delivery of alcohol.

– I would like to state our group’s disappointment with the activities of the Speaker’s Council led by Speaker Halla-aho yesterday. Contrary to the committee’s own position, he ignored a matter that belongs to it according to the normal division of labor, Tuppurainen criticized.

He considers Halla-aho’s activities to be an underestimation by the committee.

– This is not suitable for increasing the committee’s good working culture and working atmosphere, when even the highest authority of the parliament is ready to underestimate the health and safety committee in this way, Tuppurainen says.

– I expect Speaker Halla-aho to stand up to support the parliament’s ability to function.

What could that support be in practice?

– It is at the speaker’s own discretion. It’s hard to see that the Speaker’s Council, which runs the parliament, could be completely on the sidelines from all of this. Based on what we saw yesterday, we started down the road where the role of the social and health committee was underestimated.

The transfer of the bills will be discussed in the plenary session on Friday. The ranks of the governing parties are cracking, as the RKP and the Christian Democrats will vote in favor of having the bills discussed in the social and health committee.
