The secrets of the Plovdiv village of Skutare are revealed!
A bronze appliqué of the god Dionysus was discovered by archaeologists who were investigating a multi-layered provincial settlement, located on several hectares near the village of Skutare, dated to 6000 BC.
The find is 15 centimeters high and was most likely attached to a chariot, said the head of field research Elena Bozhinova.
The studied settlement is agrarian in nature, with a rural population. It is not distinguished by luxury household items, which is why the finds at the site are few in number. However, the settlement was located near the richest city in Thrace – Philipopol.
The people who lived near today’s Skutare used to visit Filipopol to enjoy the good goods and were tempted to buy something, adds Bojinova. One of these things is the application found in one of the pitos, along with an iron scythe, “Trud” reports.
Dionysus is represented upright, with a panther next to him. The appliqué is very well made, and the material is extremely well preserved, commented Bojinova. It is already in the restoration studio of the Regional Archaeological Museum (RAM) in Plovdiv.
According to the archaeologist, in all the metal objects from Skutare, the metal is very well preserved, the patination is very little and almost did not damage the objects and coins. This is due to a feature of the soil.
“The archaeologists had a month to explore 7.5 decares of the settlement. The tradition continued with the discovery of the wells at this site. This year, seven have been discovered, bringing the total number for the investigated settlement to 22. Excavations at the site were completed on August 9. – the pleasant surprise for me was that this part of the settlement, which we studied this year, was intensively inhabited during the Middle Bronze Age,” said Elena Bozhinova.
Scutare’s secrets fall! They found a divine find
It is from this period that the largest well with a diameter of 3.30 meters was discovered on the last working day. Specialists already have a clear idea of how the terrain was settled, what was the layout of the settlement during the Middle Bronze Age, the Middle Ages and the Roman period.
Three houses of light construction with hearths have been studied since the Middle Ages. On the other hand, there were very large spaces around them, surrounded by massive fences.
A large amount of mass material – ceramics and bones – was discovered at the site. Their primary processing is ahead, which will take a month or two. After that, a complete processing of the documentation must be done. “We know that neighboring plots are about to be built on. We hope that some investor will not surprise us with his intention to build very urgently. If one appears, we will be obliged to react,” said the archaeologist.
The rescue excavations of this settlement are taking place for the second year. It was opened in 2017, when field studies were carried out due to the reconstruction of the railway line Plovdiv – Burgas.
We intend to participate in the traditional exhibition “Bulgarian Archeology”, which is organized at the National Archaeological Institute with a museum at the BAS, noted Bozhinova, quoted by BTA.
It presents the most attractive objects and finds from the studies for the relevant year. Last year they participated with 16 objects from the site in Skutare, and RAM – Plovdiv presented a total of 18 objects.
