Sculptor Juan Carlos Carillo creates life-size statue of Just Fontaine in Reims gallery open to public

Until the beginning of June, sculptor Juan Carlos Carillo and his apprentice Mathias Galichet are sculpting a life-size statue of Stade de Reims legend Just Fontaine, record scorer in the Football World Cup. Work carried out facing the public, in a gallery open to all, in the center of Reims (Marne).

“We have no room for error. The monument will remain for hundreds of years, each step must be perfectly successful”, summarizes Mathias Galichet, both hands stained with earth. For four years he has been an apprentice to sculptor Juan Carlos Carillo, and at the beginning of April they began sculpting a life-size statue of Stade de Reims legend Just Fontaine, in the parallel gallery of the Yellow art gallery Korner (DP Gallery) in Reims.

For two months, they will shape the statue of the record scorer of the Football World Cup (13 goals in a single edition) before it is exhibited at the Auguste Delaune stadium from September. On site, it will join the first statue of a footballer to have been permanently exhibited in France: that of the first French Ballon d’Or, Raymond Kopa.

Even if the task is heavy, there is no need to worry among the craftsmen: “this is not the first time that we have created works of this scale, which will remain for hundreds of years. Large volumes do not scare us”, assures Juan Carlos Carillo. With his apprentice, he notably carried out a sculpture by Dom Pérignon in Hautvillers (Marne) and one of Louis XV in Epernay (Marne). “But it’s still a challenge to make something beautiful and expressive. Magnificent even”tempers the Peruvian sculptor.

Until “end of May, beginning of June”, you can therefore go to 4 passage Talleyrand to observe the master and student advancing on this monument, from 10 a.m. to noon, then from 2 to 7 p.m. The opportunity to interact with them and observe the evolution of the work day after day, before its departure for Paris, where it will be molded to last for centuries. At the same time, an exhibition of the works of Juan Carlos Carillo is taking place in the same gallery, to easily kill two birds with one stone.
