For years I have seen people report that the ribbon (now more than 13 years old) would take up too much space. But not only can you collapse it (so that you have a menu-like structure), it also takes up about as much space as 3 rows of the old button bars in Office.
One can still find that too much space. And folding in one has an extra click that one has to go through. Incidentally, I find the ribbons handy, if properly arranged. It is more functional with screens with a 16:10 ratio, but unfortunately you don’t see that much anymore.
And when you look at screen resolution, we’ve never had so much room for the actual content of our documents as today.
Resolution says nothing without DPI. I have seen 4k / UHD / HiDPI screens in notebooks where a lot of screen space is also wasted, while space is already limited. See the average Metro / UWP / WPF / whatever application from Microsoft, which still shows Microsoft’s philosophy that everything is a touch screen / tablet in the future. Meanwhile, most people still work frequently and productively on notebooks with a keyboard, mouse, and the classic win32 applications that show more information in less space.
This is written on a notebook with a 1366×768 screen under Linux, which allows me to take in and produce information faster than with Microsoft’s latest stash on a HiDPI screen.
