Scream clearly has nothing more to say. Nothing is right in this new chapter, a direct sequel to Scream 5, passed an intro scene among the best of the saga. But the rest is familiar with the absolute stupid. And yet, we enjoyed Scream 5 here at Filmsactu. Remain the recreational massacres and the mask of Ghostface always so impactful on the big screen.

After striking three times in Woodsboro, after terrorizing the Windsor campus and Hollywood studios, Ghostface decided to crack down on the Big Apple, but in a city as big as New York no one will hear you scream…

A year after its return to Woodsboro, the Ghostface saga is moving to New York with the promise of a new and exciting bloody hunt and new rules, but… it’s a cold shower or a script vacuum (hello, the sterile twists and unlikely).

With nothing to tell, Scream 6 at least has the smarts to go into brutal, gory, recreational slasher and press its meta reflections so hard that it sometimes feels like some characters are aware of being in a movie (welcome to the meta of the meta of the meta).

Scream

The idea of going to New York and finally getting out of Woodsboro was more than exciting. But the promise to use a new decor to offer something new is in no way kept. We were expecting a mad chase in the streets of the Big Apple (the directors insisted that NY was a character in its own right) but nay, Scream 6 happens more in enclosed places than outdoors.

Apart from a sequence in a grocery store, another in the subway (very very disappointing) and an intro in a restaurant (very successful this time), Scream 6 never includes its setting in its story. No Jason Takes Manhattan here (Friday 13 VIII).

Scream

And Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega or Samara Weaving are not doing badly, this is not the case of Hayden Panettiereridiculous as an FBI agent.

As for the famous reveal final, it is of a dismaying debility (perhaps the worst reveal of the saga which however is not afraid of anything in its mysteries with Scooby Doo).

Scream

In short, a huge disappointment (and yet we were betting on the defenders of Scream 5), except for a surprising and clever intro scene (to be classified in the top of Scream intros) and some killer scenes in the staging effective.

Scream 2 remains the best sequel of the saga by far.

As for Courteney Coxthe more we advance, the more it is frozen in its game and imposes itself as an uninteresting relic of the past.

Scream

Scream 6 is clearly not intended for fans of the debut saga, who will cry foul, but for the new generation who discovered Ghostface with Scream 5.

All this will not prevent the film from being a hit given the massive and powerful promotion. In addition a Scream 7 (to close the story with Sidney?) would be in the starting blocks for 2024.
