A Scottish man claims to have found whale vomit aka ambergris worth more than 50 thousand pounds sterling (equivalent to Rp. 966 million). However, Ambergris experts say otherwise.
Ronnie Humphreys (42) admitted that he found ambergris while walking on Leven beach in the city of Fife, Scotland last Sunday (16/7). The Ambergris he found weighed 4.5 pounds or the equivalent of 2 kilograms.
With full confidence, Ronnie said the object he found on the beach was whale vomit, aka ambergris. He also had time to do a test by burning it and the results were encouraging.
“This is definitely whale vomit. We have conducted our own trials at home and have passed all of them,” said Ronnie, as quoted from South West News Service, Monday (24/7/2023).
When he found the ambergris, Ronnie was walking with his 5 year old son. At that time, Ronnie’s son named Alfie was looking for crabs on the beach.
Suddenly, Alfie stepped on something that felt soft like wax. The object had been left by Ronnie and Alfie. But finally, Ronnie came back and picked it up to take home.
“I picked it up and I knew right away what it was. However, I couldn’t be this lucky. I went and continued walking, but something told me to come back and get it,” said Ronnie.
Ambergris so far known to have a very high selling price, can reach thousands of dollars per kilo. The secretion of the Sperm Whale’s digestive tract is usually used as a raw material for high-quality perfume.
If true that thing is ambergris then Ronnie can earn big. However, experts from Ambergris Europe said that the object found by Ronnie was not ambergris, but only sewage.
“It looks like oil degraded from sewage wastewater. The material is commonly found from human-produced pollution on the coasts of the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans,” said a spokesperson for Ambergris Europe.
Even so, Ronnie admitted that he would still sell it on the market. Weighing 2 kilograms, the Ambergris that Ronnie found is worth more than 50 thousand pounds sterling or the equivalent of Rp. 966 million.
“The money will definitely change our lives. The money will ensure the lives of my children,” said Ronnie.
