Scottish Government Accused of Betrayal After Cutting Refugee Support Funding

Local councils in a number of Scottish towns have not received £10 million to fund the operation of hotels that house refugees from Ukraine, which may force them to find other accommodation.

Details: Last year, the Scottish Government provided funds to local authorities to help provide temporary housing for those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Now he refused to allocate this funding due to difficulties in finding additional funds.

The Convention of Scottish Local Government (COSLA) wrote to the government in Edinburgh back in October, raising concerns about the lack of funding for 2024.

Scotland’s Social Justice Minister Shirley-Anne Somerville responded at the time that setting the regional budget was “extremely complex” and required “difficult decisions.”

Now the authorities of Scottish cities are warning about the threat of eviction of refugees from Ukraine, and opposition politicians are criticizing the regional government. Edinburgh City Council deputy leader Mandy Watt said the move would have “unintended consequences” and increase homelessness in the city.

“After everything we have done together to support thousands of people who have suffered so much, we are shocked by this decision, which affects families starting new lives here in Scotland,” she said.

And the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Alex Cole-Hamilton, who received the Ukrainian at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, said that the Scottish National Party in power “is now indifferent to Ukrainian refugees.”

COSLA is expected to meet with Scotland’s Social Justice Minister next week to explore ways to resolve the situation.

As of November 2023 “super sponsorship” scheme 17,463 refugees from Ukraine arrived in Scotland. Most of them, due to the lack of alternatives, were placed in hotels and cruise ships.
