The 32-year-old Darling started his NHL career at 26 with the Chicago Blackhawks. Opening three seasons as assistant to Quebecker Corey Crawford, he maintained a 39-17-9 record, a 2.37 goals-against average and a .923 save rate in 75 games.
Traded to the Hurricanes in June 2017, however, he was unable to establish himself as number one goaltender, so the Carolina club gave him up in the American League in the thick of the 2018-19 season.
Acquired by the Panthers in a transaction in June 2019, he saw his contract be bought out. He then decided to join the Innsbruck HC in the last campaign.
