Scotland Yard announces at least 20 fines for Downing Street parties

Scotland Yard, la London Metropolitan Policerecommends imposing up to 20 fines to the different assistants of the multiple parties held in Downing Street during the Covid-19 pandemic, an event that did not comply with the regulations that the host himself, Boris Johnson, imposed on the country. In January, the police opened their own investigation into candy of these events on eight different dateswith the aim of verifying whether the regulations imposed by the Government to contain the expansion of the coronavirus had indeed been violated.

Scotland Yard has confirmed in a statement that it is in favor of imposing 20 fines, although for now it is a first evaluation due to “the significant amount of material” that remains to be examined. He does not clarify either how these punishments will be distributed, since he considers that giving more details can contribute to identify people marked. The Police investigation was launched outside the independent report commissioned by the Government and which has already called into question some meetings held between May 2020 and April 2021. Johnson, who attended at least three of them, has apologized, but has always maintained that the rules were not broken.

The controversy

The London Metropolitan Police began on January 25 an investigation into the controversies parties that have been held in Downing Street during the pandemic, an issue that has caused tensions within the ‘tories’ and that could cost Prime Minister Boris Johnson his job at the head of the Executive. Commissioner Cressida Dick has indicated that the security forces will analyze “possible violations of regulations imposed due to the coronavirus” within the Government during the last three years.
