Scotland: the Minister of Health, candidate for the succession of Nicola Sturgeon

Posted Feb 19 2023 at 10:50

He is the first to appear. Scottish Health Minister Humza Yousaf announced on Saturday that he would run for the succession of Nicola Sturgeon, after the announcement last Wednesday of the resignation of the Prime Minister, in office for eight years. He is running for the head of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the post of Prime Minister.

Humza Yousaf, 37, has been a member of the Scottish Parliament since 2011 and has previously held several ministerial posts. He is therefore the first candidate to enter the race. “It’s a huge decision to make, but with the support and love of my family, I have decided to put myself forward as a candidate to become the next Scottish First Minister and leader of the SNP,” he said. said in a message posted on Twitter.

An internal party vote will be held between March 13 and March 27, the SNP announced last Thursday, after a meeting of its leaders to determine the terms of appointment of their future leader.

Taking up the torch of the independence cause

Among the other potential suitors mentioned by the press are the young Minister of Finance Kate Forbes or the former MP Angus Robertson. Nicola Sturgeon’s deputy John Swinney, who was approached, announced that he would not be a candidate.

Whoever succeeds Nicola Sturgeon, he will have the heavy task of taking up the torch of the independence cause. The former Prime Minister carried the fight high, without however making it succeed so far, London refusing the prospect of a new referendum.

Party officials have also decided to postpone a major congress on the subject which was to take place in March. “It would be a mistake to have a newly elected leader tied to a key decision on how we ensure democracy in Scotland in the face of continued intransigence” from London, Lorna Finn, the party’s national secretary, said last Thursday.
