The historical thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon” has been voted the best film of 2023 by the renowned US film association National Board of Review.
Reason: “Breathtaking masterpiece”
The film by Martin Scorsese (81) is a “breathtaking masterpiece” by one of the greatest filmmakers, said NBR chairwoman Annie Schulhof, justifying the choice. The directing award also goes to Scorsese. The association named Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers” and Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon” as the best leading actors.
Here’s the thing: In the 1920s, rich oil discoveries in Oklahoma brought great wealth to members of the Osage Nation, which aroused envy and greed among whites. An influential rancher (Robert de Niro) hires his nephew (Leonardo di Caprio) to first marry and then eliminate an Osage woman in order to profit from the black gold. After a series of brutal deaths among the Osage, the newly founded FBI soon uncovers complicated connections that reach into the highest circles of power.
The film recapitulates the “Oklahoma Murders” from the perspective of racist whites and is about the consequences of unbridled capitalism and the exploitation of indigenous people. The very quiet, over 200 minute long film seems like a major revision of Martin Scorsese’s previous cinema.
“The Teacher’s Room” as a top international film
The French legal drama “Anatomy of a Case” won in the International Film category. The German Sandra Hülser (45, “Toni Erdmann”) plays a writer who is accused of killing her husband in the house they shared.
