Old hits and newer songs were played by the famous German hard rock band Scorpions this Wednesday for thousands of fans in Brno. The audience started rioting as soon as they saw the five musicians. She tuned it up with the song Gas in the Tank, published only last year.
Songs followed Make it Real a The Zooboth from the album Animal Magnetism released in 1980. The latter featured a long instrumental insert for four electric guitars.
The concert took place in the Winning Group arena, formerly known as the DRFG arena. Just like on the previous legs of the current tour, the band played their probably biggest hit: a song with a whistling theme Wind of Change from 1990, which since last year he has been dedicating to Ukraine facing the Russian invasion. The song, which recently crossed one billion views on YouTube, was once exaggeratedly described as the soundtrack to the end of the Cold War. It was created after the band gave a concert in Moscow in August 1989, at the height of perestroika.
“Hello Brno, how are you?” shouted singer Klaus Meine, dressed in the indispensable cap, this Wednesday after the second song of the evening. Together with his teammates, he brought a spectacular light and video show, which was watched by an estimated 10,000 spectators.
The audience consisted mainly of older fans, including peers of the musicians, but there were often significantly younger listeners among them. Also on stage was guitarist Rudolf Schenker, who founded the group as a student ensemble in 1965 and as a professional band four years later in Hanover.
Singer Meine, who joined the group in the early 1970s, is 75 years old today, Schenker will celebrate his 75th birthday in a few months. Despite their advanced age, their performance and arrangement captivated fans from the start. The crowd enjoyed the music.
Although the musicians said goodbye to the fans already ten years ago and assumed that they would not continue to give concerts, in the end it was not possible for them. As part of the current line called Rock Believer, they tour the world. Last Friday they were in Zurich, on Monday they continued to Munich. The tour started in April this year, when they toured South America. They cruised the USA last fall, having already been to Prague.
Scorpions play hard rock and heavy metal. They sing in English, so they always had fans outside of Germany. Their special discipline is rock ballads. In a career spanning more than half a century, they sold 120 million CDs and played over 5,000 concerts. They released the album, which bears the same name as the current line, i.e. Rock Believer, last year.
After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Scorpions also repeatedly go to the Czech Republic. In Brno’s Winning Group arena, then known as Rondo, they performed for the first time in 2004.
