Scorer Lautaro Martínez returns with a double against Udinese

Roma., Lautaro Martínez ended his 42-day post-Copa América slump with a brace in Inter Milan’s 3-1 Serie A victory against Udinese on Saturday.

The Argentine led the league last season with 24 goals and scored a team-high five goals in the Copa América — including the winner in the final — as Argentina lifted the trophy in July.

But after last weekend’s derby defeat against AC Milan, he acknowledged that he is not in the best shape after going five Serie A games without scoring with Inter — in addition to the 0-0 draw with Manchester City in the Champions League, a match in which he started as a substitute due to his poor physical condition.

“He is our captain and we all know what he represents,” said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi. “He always trains hard and today he was great… Sometimes you come back stronger from losses.”

After Davide Frattesi opened the scoring for Inter and Christian Kabasele equalized for Udinese, Martínez scored in both periods. First he shot into the back of the goal on a rebound after missing his first attempt. With the second he finished a play after a pass from Marcus Thuram to revive the scoring duo that led Inter to win the title last season.

Martínez scored in Serie A for the first time since March.

Lorenzo Lucca brought Udiense closer with a goal near the end.

With this result, Inter was tied on points with Torino and Milan, one point below Juventus, which beat Genoa 3-0. Milan beat Lecce 3-0 on Friday and Torino hosts Lazio on Sunday.

Dušan Vlahović scored twice as Juvetnsu ended a streak of three consecutive goalless draws with a 3-0 victory over Genoa — where Juve coach Thiago Motta began his coaching career.

Juventus went six games in a row without conceding a goal to start the season. One more and the Bianconeri will tie the mark set by Cagliari in 1966.

The match was played without fans as punishment for violence between rivals before the Genoa derby.

Vlahović converted a penalty in the first half and later took a pass from Teun Koopmeiners to score from the angle.

Francisco Conceicao sealed the result at 89 by redirecting a cross shot from Khephren Thuram.

Lazar Samardzic scored in the 90th minute and Atalanta drew 1-1 with Bologna, which was left with 10 men, in a duel of teams competing in the Champions League.

Bologna’s Argentine striker Santiago Castro, 20, scored for the third consecutive game one minute after the match restarted.

Six minutes later, Bologna were reduced to 10 men when Jhon Lucumi received a red card for a foul on Charles De Ketelaere.

Atalanta continued to press and finally equalized with a long shot from Samardzic.

On Wednesday, Bologna visits Liverpool and Atalanta visits Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
