The Amsterdam police are looking for a scooter driver who fled after a collision in which a cyclist died.
The victim is a 73-year-old man. The accident took place on Rembrandtplein just before midnight last night. An air ambulance was also called and the victim was resuscitated, but help was of no avail. After the collision, the scooter rider left the scooter behind and fled on foot.
The police are still investigating how the accident could have occurred and from which direction the two road users came, a spokesperson reports to NOS. The driver is currently suspected of leaving the scene of an accident.
Due to the accident, public transport in the vicinity of Rembrandtplein was diverted. Two tram lines and two night bus lines were temporarily hindered as a result. The Rembrandtplein, with the streets around it, is one of the busiest entertainment areas in Amsterdam. Part of the square was cordoned off with police tape for the investigation and the police had set up a tent at the intersection of Reguliersdwarsstraat and Rembrandtplein.
