Loubna Khalkhali (29), who got married to filmmaker Adil El Arbi in Hoboken last Saturday, can be seen on VRT NU as of today in the miniseries Sheroes, which she made together with reporter Lara Richir. Khalkhali is therefore the first journalist in Flanders to appear on screen with a headscarf.

Sheroes shows three portraits of women who have had to compete hard in sports dominated by men: bodybuilding, boxing and football. Imane & Asmae from Molenbeek, Najat from Antwerp and Yinthe from Turnhout are not only confronted with discrimination on the basis of their gender, but individually they each fight their own battle. “In our culture, girls are expected to follow a certain path. But who says a man can’t stand in the kitchen and a woman on the football field?”

Loubna Khalkhali came to talk about the series at De Warmste Week in Mechelen. The theme of Sheroes could hardly be more in line with that of De Warmste Week, because it is all about ‘being able to be who you are’.

Keigraaf

Khalkali told how she had worked on it until just before her wedding. “It was a beautiful ceremony and I still can’t quite grasp it. But I was really into Sheroes until the last minute because I thought it was important to do it right. Adil has supported me very hard, he also likes the series keigraaf.

The three-part series Sheroes can be seen on VRT NU since this morning, making Khalkhali the first journalist in Flanders to appear on screen with a headscarf. “In the trend of ‘being who you want to be’ of the Warmest Week, this is a nice step towards more diversity on our screens and to be more a reflection of our society”, says her colleague Lara Richir.
