Mexico City. In a private session, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) approved this Thursday, by eight votes to three, its Expenditure Budget Project for 2025, which contemplates the salary reduction of 330 senior officials of that high court, including the 11 ministers.
As La Jornada published today in its printed edition, Minister President Norma Piña Hernández had to include the salary reduction derived from the impact of the reform to the Judicial Branch of the Federation (PJF) that came into force on September 16.
The budget proposal had been stuck since last Monday because ministers like Lenia Batres initially rejected it since the project that Piña presented to them omitted the impact of the judicial reform, so adjustments had to be made.
In the Project that was approved today, Congress will request a budget of 5,922.9 million pesos, which represents a nominal increase of 2.3% compared to what was authorized in 2024 ($135.8 million additional pesos), but a decrease in real terms of 1.4 %, taking inflation at the end of 2024 as a parameter, estimated by the Bank of Mexico.
However, Minister Lenia Batres accused on social networks that the Court’s Budget Project did not include the concerns of ministers, among them that the workers’ salary will continue above the limit set by the Constitution, which is the salary of the person holding the Presidency of the Republic.
“After three discussion sessions, not a single modification was made derived from the observations presented.
“Basically, I observed: 1. The unconstitutional remuneration of ministers is maintained. Not all of the concepts that make it up are transparent. Only risk payment is eliminated and concepts expressly prohibited by the Law continue to be included.
“2. There are no austerity measures. On the contrary, they increase various items, such as works, in an excessive and unjustified manner. 3. Nothing is mentioned about the six trusts that the SCJN has (out of 14 of the Judicial Branch), of which the constitutional reform orders to extinguish and deliver their balances to the Treasury of the Federation,” he published.
Lenia Batres, Yasmín Esquivel and Loretta Ortiz were against the project; in favor were Norma Piña, José Luis González Alcántara, Javier Laynez, Alfredo Gutiérrez, Margarita Ríos Farjat, Alberto Pérez Dayán and Luis María Aguilar.
