A mysterious cloud on Mars, about 1,800 km wide, has begun to reveal its secrets, AFP reported. It was studied by specialists from the University of Bilbao and the Institute of Astrophysics at the University of Paris-Saclé, BTA reports.
The cloud was discovered in the 1970s. It appears daily for several months over one of the major volcanoes. However, his observations are hampered by his location, which is only visible for short periods. In September 2018, it was again registered by the instruments of the European probe “Mars Express”.
Observations show that during most of the Martian spring and summer, which last 12 Earth months, the cloud forms every morning on the inside of the Arsia Mons volcano before sunrise from icy steam. It rises to about 40 km. There the winds spread it to the west with a speed of up to 600 km / h. at a distance of up to 1800 km. The cloud lingers for about two hours until it disappears under the influence of the sun’s rays.
