Scientists Uncover New Species of Seal in the Arctic – The Kangia Seal

Hidden in the Ice Fjord near Ilulissat in Western Greenland for hundreds of thousands of years has been a tiny population of a special species of ringed seal, common in the Arctic. This new species is named the Kangia seal.

This is reported by SciTechDaily.

Thus, local hunters discovered an amazing new species of seal, which stands out for its large size and differs in appearance, including the color and pattern of its fur. A team of researchers, in collaboration with local hunters, used nets to catch representatives of this species. After this, special sensors were installed on the backs of the seals, which made it possible to obtain additional information about them and their natural habitat.

It is noted that scientists subsequently studied the area from the air, which allowed them to count the number of Kangia seals. Preliminary estimates indicate that their current population is about 3 thousand individuals. During the study, scientists took small tissue samples from these mammals and conducted genetic analysis to compile their DNA profile.

However, scientists have still not been able to determine the location and conditions under which Arctic Kangia seals were isolated for a long time from their other relatives.

Previously, “Cursor” already wrote that a new species of dinosaur was discovered in the American state of Missouri, called Parrosaurus missouriensis, which is a duck-billed dinosaur capable of reaching a length of up to 10 meters. This reptile was discovered and pulled out of the ground about a month ago, scientists report that the dinosaur is approximately 10 meters long and weighs about 907 kg.
