Scientists have established a way to influence coronavirus on human blood cells. The study involved employees of the Ibin and Sichuan universities.

During the experiment, experts found that COVID-19 attacks red blood cells, thereby establishing a connection with hemoglobin molecules. The named protein is in contact with oxygen, absorbing it in the lungs and moving into body tissue. As scientists noted, some non-structural proteins encoded by viral RNA are responsible for communication with blood cells. Against the background of this interaction, the inflamed processes observed in the lungs are exacerbated. As a result, hypoxemia appears and ARDS develops.
In addition, these processes can cause multiple organ oxygen deficiency. Scientists also added that thanks to this discovery, the effectiveness of favipiravir and hydroxychloroquine during treatment of coronavirus can be explained.
