Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States Space Agency (USA) or NASA managed to find a hidden water source on Mars. In recent research, this possibility could be a clue to the search for evidence for ancient life.
The evidence was taken by the Perseverance vehicle that landed in the Jesero crater last February. The findings come from NASA astrobiologist Amy Williams and a team in Florida USA.
Scientists suspect this is a long-lost river that has fan-shaped sediments visible from space.
The study shows a resolution image of the vehicle on a cliff that was once the edge of the delta. The inner layer depicts the formation taking place.
The photo found the bottom of the crater as well as a delta pattern similar to that of a river on Earth. The shape of the lower three layers indicates the presence and steady flow of water.
This shows that Mars is warm and humid enough to support the hydrological cycle. In addition, it was also revealed that this incident occurred 3.7 billion years ago, quoted from The Guardian, Friday (12/17/2021).
From the top and latest layers have a large mix with a diameter of more than one meter. This probably stems from a terrible flood.
“From the orbital images, we know the water that makes up the delta. But with this image it’s like reading a book, not just the cover,” said Amy Williams.
According to him, knowing life on Mars could be one of the greatest discoveries humans have ever made.
Meanwhile Perseverance has various assignments on Mars. Including collecting rock samples from the planet and scientists announced the vehicle has collected two new samples from Jezero.
Both stones are said to have marks of having been in contact with groundwater for a long time. Researchers also predict rock samples could harbor ancient microbial life and evidence could be trapped in mineral salts.
