Scientists successfully destroy 99% of cancer cells using this method

His number an expert he managed to destroy 99% cancer cells in the laboratory. These findings provide hope for future cancer treatments.

The scientists excited the aminocyanine molecules with near-infrared light and caused them to vibrate in sync. This breaks down the cancer cell membrane.

Aminocyanine molecules are already used in bioimaging as synthetic dyes. Usually used in low doses to detect cancer, they are stable in water and are excellent at sticking to the outside of cells.

Tim researcher from Rice University, Texas A&M University, and the University of Texas, say their approach is a major improvement over other types of molecular machines that have been developed before, namely Feringa motors.

“This is a new generation of molecular machine that we call the molecular jackhammer,” said chemist James Tour of Rice University, when the results were published in December 2023.

“They are more than a million times faster in mechanical movement than previous Feringa-like motors, and can be activated by near-infrared light rather than visible light,” he continued.

The use of near-infrared light is important because it allows scientists to go deeper into the body. Bone and organ cancers can be treated without the need for surgery to target the cancer growth.

In tests on cultured and grown cancer cells in the laboratory, the molecular jackhammer method achieved a 99% success rate in destroying the cells. This approach was also tested on mice with melanoma tumors, and half of the animals were cancer free. This research was published in Nature Chemistry.

Although this research is still in its early stages, these initial findings are very promising. Next, the researchers will look at other types of molecules that could be used in similar ways. That is how it is written Science Alert which was published on Wednesday (2/10/2024).
