Scientists’ Solution to Cool the Earth Using the Moon, Here’s How!

MojokertoNetwork – To prevent further damage to the Earth, humanity must limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. In the new study, researchers found a new way to help reduce global warming: throwing dust into space from the moon’s surface to cool Earth.

In a paper published last week in the journal PLOS Climate, researchers used computer modeling to explore how the new strategy might work. One of the most promising techniques uncovered involves launching large amounts of dust from the lunar surface toward the first Lagrange point, one of five regions of space where the gravitational pull of Earth and the Sun cancels each other out.

At this point, everything (like the moon’s giant cloud) is basically still there. The freckles can block about 1.8 percent of sunlight – the equivalent of about six sunny days a year – but it takes 10 billion kilograms of dust a year to do so, the researchers say in a 15/2 paper.

But according to scientist Chad M Baum of Aarhus University in Denmark, blocking sunlight from space is the “most improbable engineering project” to tackle climate change due to financial, technical and policy challenges. Baum was not involved in this study.

Over the years, scientists have devised several strategies to cool the Earth by avoiding direct sunlight. Suggested strategies include deploying clouds of small spacecraft to build sun visors that can span thousands of miles, writes Rahul Rao of Popular Science. Researchers are also looking at releasing aerosols into the atmosphere to aid cloud formation, but this could have unintended consequences, including affecting precipitation patterns and damaging the ozone layer.

The use of moondust to block the sun has been suggested. It’s theoretically easier to get dust off the Moon than from Earth because of the Moon’s weaker gravity, says Benjamin Bromley, a theoretical astrophysicist at the University of Utah.

He added that moon dust is also a good defense.

“Firstly, it can be very effective at reducing sun exposure, secondly, it turns out that the most effective particle sizes are those that are most abundant on the lunar surface,” Bromley told CNET. But as Australian National University (ANU) scholar Aaron Tang writes in The Conversation, building dust collection infrastructure and setting up a lunar launch system could take decades.
