Led by Yoram Rozen, a physics professor at the Asher Space Research Institute and director of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, this team is ready to take their idea from concept to reality. However, they face a significant challenge: creating a shield that covers an area of approximately one million square miles, equivalent to the size of Argentina.

Launching such a massive structure into space using a single rocket is simply not feasible. To overcome this obstacle, Rozen and his team have devised a plan to deploy a swarm of smaller shades that will work together in space. The goal is to demonstrate the viability of this approach and encourage further development on a larger scale. Rozen explains, “We can show the world, ‘Look, there is a working solution, take it, increase it to the necessary size.'”

While this idea may seem radical, the concept of blocking a portion of the Sun’s radiation has been around for decades. Previous proposals have suggested blocking anywhere between one and two percent of the Sun’s rays to mitigate the effects of global warming. Last year, a team of scientists from Harvard and the University of Utah explored the idea of placing dust at a “Lagrange point” between the Sun and Earth as a means of combating climate change. Another team proposed using an actual umbrella tethered to an asteroid to achieve a similar effect.

However, it is important to note that a sunshade alone would not solve the problem entirely. The Earth’s atmosphere would still trap heat in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. Critics argue that the cost and feasibility of deploying such a sunshade would be prohibitive, especially considering the rapid pace at which global warming is accelerating. Additionally, the shade would need to withstand the harsh conditions of outer space.

Despite the skepticism, proponents of this idea believe that exploring all possible solutions to climate change is crucial. Rozen and his team are now seeking funding of $10 million to $20 million to build a prototype and demonstrate the feasibility of their concept. While they acknowledge that their efforts alone will not save the planet, they hope to inspire further innovation and demonstrate that it is indeed possible.
