TOKYO – A number of astronomer in Japan claims that a new, nearly Earth-like planet may exist near the solar system.
As reported by the Daily Mail, a team of scientists believe the new planet is hiding in the Kuiper Belt, which lies outside the orbit of Neptune.
The planet, known as the Kuiper Belt (KBP), is said to be about 500 astronomical units from the sun, which is about 500 times the distance between Earth and the sun and closer than Planet Nine.
According to experts, the size of the KBP is three times the size of Earth.
However, scientists say temperatures on the new planet will likely be too cold to support life.
The study was conducted by researchers from Kindai University in Osaka, Patryk Sofia Lykawka and an expert at Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory, Takashi Ito.
“We predict the existence of other Earth-like planets near our solar system,”
“It is highly plausible that ancient planets might be in the distant Kupier Belt because many similar planets have existed in the solar system before,” they explain in a research paper.
The research paper is published in The Astronomical Journal.
The team of scientists added that they only thought a Kuiper Belt planet might exist because more research was needed to confirm its existence.
