Scientists have studied the link between Covid-19 and brain damage

Scientists from the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke have tried to figure out how the coronavirus affects the brain.

“We performed high-resolution postmortem magnetic resonance imaging of the brains of patients with Covid-19 and histopathological examination aimed at microvascular changes,” the publication said. New England Journal of Medicine.

Brain scans using MRI were performed in 13 patients. Abnormalities were noted in the brains of 10 patients.

The specialists also conducted a histopathological examination of the brains of 18 patients. As it turned out, fourteen patients suffered from chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension.

The study revealed a point hyperintensity, which could be caused by a violation of the blood supply to the vessels of the brain. Areas of linear hypointensity have also been reported that have been interpreted as microbleeds.

At the same time, experts note that due to the lack of available clinical information, it is not yet possible to draw unambiguous conclusions regarding the impact of Covid-19 on the brain.
