scientists have solved another mystery of Stonehenge

According to the researchers, the images on the limestone stones have real prototypes.

Four limestone stones were found in the Stonehenge area between 1968 and 2017, and now scientists have found that these stones of the late Neolithic era depict real objects that were known to the ancient artist, and not abstractions, as was previously thought. dailymail.co.uk

These stone tablets are considered one of the finest examples of prehistoric art in the British Isles. Experts from Wessex Archeology conducted the new analysis using special instruments.

The new analysis has revealed in these works of art, which are geometric patterns, previously undiscovered elements, which in turn demonstrate a number of artistic abilities.

Meaningful composition

According to archaeologists, the limestone engravings show thoughtful, staged composition, execution and detail. In one of the images, scientists found, for example, a twisted rope, and it was most likely known to an ancient artist.

“These stone tablets were previously cataloged using hand-drawn illustrations and were difficult to accurately reconstruct due to erosion,” says archaeologist Bob Davis. “But new technologies have made it possible to see previously unrecognized features on them.”

“Limestone stones were very good material as canvas for Neolithic artists. They could not only create drawings, but also change them and even remove unsuccessful ones,” says archaeologist Phil Harding, who first analyzed the stones in 1988.

Using new technological advances, it can be assumed that Neolithic artists used objects that were known to them to depict and served as inspiration for artistic expression, scientists say. According to archaeologists, the new study not only allowed for a better understanding of the working methods of Neolithic artists, but also provided an insight into their way of thinking.

The Neolithic era lasted according to various estimates from about 9500 to 3500 BC.
