Researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that wearing two masks at the same time reduces the risk of infection by up to 80-90 percent. This is reported on the website of the organization.
During the experiment, scientists tested several options for wearing masks and how they effectively trap viral particles when coughing.
Doctors have explored the following options: one three-layer mask for medical procedures, one three-layer cloth mask, and a three-layer cloth mask that covers the medical mask, and a double mask or mask with tied ear loops.
The results showed that the mask without the tied loops blocked 42 percent of aerosol particles, while one sheet mask blocked 44.3 percent. The two masks blocked 92.5 percent of the particles.
If the source was not wearing a mask and the exposed person was wearing a double mask, then this combination provided 83 percent protection.
