Scientists have found a factor accelerating the development of multiple sclerosis | News | News

The reason for the rapid progression of multiple sclerosis may be the decreased activity of the ATG7 gene. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, writes Science Immunology.

According to one of the authors of the study, associate professor Maya Yagodich, an experiment on mice showed that the degree of manifestation of symptoms of the disease depended on the level of ATG7 activity.

The ATG7 gene helps cells in the nervous system to get rid of the damaged membranes of neurons, thereby promoting cell renewal.

In the case of its reduced activity, mice developed chronic inflammation and exacerbated the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

It was possible to activate the work of the gene with the help of trehalose, a sugary substance found in algae and mushrooms. As a result, after a while the condition of the mice improved.

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the nervous system that can lead to paralysis, blindness, and death.

In May last year, scientists said the risk of developing multiple sclerosis could reduce eating red meat… Experts say that a small portion of this product every day will help slow down the development of the disease.
