Scientists have assessed the dangers of smoking from case to case

This conclusion was reached by researchers from the Duke University School of Medicine and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine (USA), whose article published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Scientists analyzed data on 6,700 smokers. All of them underwent standard testing for 11 criteria by which the presence of nicotine addiction is assessed. It turned out that 85% of those who smoke daily are addicted to nicotine to one degree or another. Moreover, the more cigarettes a person smokes per day, the stronger the addiction.

At the same time, to the surprise of the researchers, nicotine addiction was observed not only among heavy smokers, but also in almost two thirds of those who smoke no more than one to four cigarettes a day, and in about a quarter of those who smoke once a week or even less often. The level of dependence was moderate to severe in 74% of people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day, and 35% of those who smoked no more than four cigarettes a day.

“Until now, it was believed that only those patients who smoke at least ten cigarettes a day suffer from addiction. Smoking occasionally was considered less harmful, and therefore it was assumed that such smokers did not need treatment. However, as our results demonstrate, many of these people, wanting to quit smoking, will not be able to do this without additional help. ” celebrate researchers.
