COVID-19 is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke and acute myocardial infarction.
In the first two weeks after infection with coronavirus, the risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke increases significantly, scientists from the Swedish University of Umeå said. This is reported in a scientific article of the journal Lancet.
In order to find out the effect of infection on the heart, experts conducted a study in which more than 86 thousand people took part.
“This is the largest study in the world on the link between coronavirus and cardiovascular disease,” the article emphasizes.
It is noted that scientists compared the incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with COVID-19 with the incidence of cardiovascular disorders in people from the control group (348 thousand people) in the period from February 1 to September 14, 2020.
As specialists found out, coronavirus increased the risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke in the first two weeks after the disease by about three times.
“This relationship persisted even taking into account factors such as comorbidities, age, gender and socio-economic factors,” the scientists noted.
