Live Science reports, that scientists have managed to grow watermelons in unexpected places; the coldest place on Earth, namely Antarctica.
This feat of agricultural scientists was part of an experiment in a greenhouse built at the Vostok Station.
The site is a Russian research station located at ‘Pole of Cold’.
For the record, named ‘Pole of Cold’ because that location is classified as the coldest place on Earth.
The recorded temperature has ever reached minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 89.2 degrees Celsius).

Create an Oasis
To create a Vostok Station greenhouse capable of growing watermelons, Russian Antarctic Expedition researchers from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), together with colleagues from the Institute for Agrophysical Research and the Institute for Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences created an oasis.
With the existence of the oasis, scientists can regulate the temperature and humidity of the air to the conditions needed for juicy fruit.
Plant 2 Watermelon Varieties
Scientists chose two varieties of watermelon that ripened early, not only for their delicious taste but also for their ability to adapt to the low atmospheric pressure and lack of oxygen in the greenhouse.
They plant seeds in a thin layer of soil substitute and use special lighting that mimics sunlight.
“Since there were no insects pollinating the plants, the researchers were tasked with pollinating everything by hand,” according to a translated statement from AARI.
Exactly 103 days after the seeds were planted, the researchers were greeted by eight “sweet ripe fruits” growing on six different plants.
