Scientists Gather to Discuss Rescue if Asteroids Hit Earth

The Planet Defense Conference will be held in Vienna from April 26-30.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WINA – Space experts will gather this month to formulate a strategy if asteroid hit Earth. The discussion will be presented in Planet Defense Conference which will be held in Vienna from April 26-30.

Space experts grapple with what to do if an alien body does come close enough to pose a danger to Earth. They warned that if that event happened, it would create a series of crises that could occur.

If that happens, it could lead to a ‘major refugee crisis’. The event could send Europeans and Americans scrambling to move to Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific.

Reported on Daily Star, Sunday (18/4), the PDC 2021 Hypothetical Asteroid Impact scenario is a simulation that will be an important part of this conference.

This scenario proposes that the asteroid will be discovered on April 21. The monitoring identified 20 October 2021, as the date of potential impact. This means that the Earth only has six months to make a rescue plan.

At first, the odds of the asteroid 2021 PDC actually colliding with our planet was only 1 in 2500 in this hypothetical situation. The simulation says that after a week scientists have to stop their observations due to the glare of the sky from the full moon.

As they continued to look through their telescopes, the situation became much more serious as it became clear the asteroid, estimated to be between 35 meters and 700 meters in size, was heading straight for Earth. This is what will be discussed at the conference.
