Infection with some strains of COVID-19 causes inflammation of the brain, as well as damage to the esophagus, blood vessels and heart.
“SARS-CoV-2 is an acute respiratory illness, but infection can also <...> cause inflammation of the brain, which was observed in a study on monkeys, ” leads February 24 journal bioRxiv test results of the Dutch Center for Biomedical Research in Primates.
Scientists have concluded that some variations of the coronavirus can lead to “long-term neurological consequences”, as well as the development of Parkinson’s disease and dementia. At the same time, it remains a mystery to researchers how the virus acts on brain cells. For two weeks, they observed monkeys and the brain of primates, different parts of which were affected. The macaques have developed inflammation in their heads and the so-called Lewy bodies, or accumulations of proteins, which distinguish Parkinson’s disease and various forms of dementia.
