Scientists Find Oldest Animal Fossil on Earth

Suara.com – To scientist find fossil 890 million years old in Northwestern Canada, which is believed to be the oldest example of animal life on Earth.

The fossil is an ancient sponge that has small, finely branched tendrils that are invisible to the naked eye.

Under a microscope, the preserved tissue reveals a web-like structure that closely resembles the fibers of modern-day bath sponges.

This fossil is part of a group of soft-bodied sponges known as keratose demosponges.

“If you look at the fossilized body of the sponge microscopically, it has a characteristic microstructure, which is described and fully affiliated with the spongin skeleton in modern keratose demosponges,” said Elizabeth Turner, professor of carbonate sedimentology and invertebrate paleontology at Laurentian University.

The fossil was discovered while experts were examining samples cyanobacteria reef fossils.

Reported from Live Science, Thursday (29/7/2021), experts have long searched for evidence of when animal life first appeared on Earth.

Prior to about 580 million years ago, there was little physical evidence of animals.

The discovery of preserved molecules is often considered one of the sources of clues about ancient animal life.
