SINERGIANEWS.com – Recently NASA’s Mars rover, Perseverance sent photos that could be evidence that Mars once had water.
Reporting from The Guardian (9/10/2021), the photos provide information that will help in the search for ancient life on Mars.
Perseverance landed at Jezero Crater in February, where geologists believe there were once long-lost lakes and rivers.
The river is believed to have flowed into a nearby lake, depositing sediment in the fan-like delta from outer space.
This study analyzes high-resolution photos of cliffs that were previously the edge of a delta obtained by Perseverance. The cliff layers show how it was formed.
Amy Williams, a NASA astrobiologist, and her team in Florida, United States (US), found parallels between cliff features visible from the crater bottom and patterns in Earth’s river deltas.
The lower three strata form implies that water exists and flows continuously from the beginning. This suggests that Mars was warm and humid enough about 3.7 billion years ago to support the hydrological cycle.
