(Belgium) Researchers at Oxford University have discovered a specific gene that doubles the risk of respiratory problems from Covid-19. The discovery could help explain why certain ethnic groups become seriously ill more quickly than others.
Using artificial intelligence and brand new molecular technology, researchers at the University of Oxford have discovered a gene that makes the cells lining the airways and lungs less responsive to the virus. They also found that about 60 percent of all people with South Asian roots carry the gene, compared to just 15 percent of people of European descent. The results of the study may thus help explain why hospitalization and death rates are higher in certain areas. However, the gene cannot be used as the sole explanation, the researchers emphasize. Many other factors, such as the socio-economic situation, also play a role. (Belgium)
