JAKARTA – Scientists find early signs of driving a rift that could trigger continents Africa is torn in two.
Computer simulations confirmed that the African superelement causes unusual deformations and seismic anisotropy parallel to the faults detected under the East African Rift System.
Sarah Stamps A geophysicist, using 3D thermal modeling of this process is related to the elongation of the lithosphere, the Earth’s hard outer layer.
As the lithosphere becomes denser, the upper part of the lithosphere undergoes a brittle change, which causes cracks in the rock and earthquakes.
As reported by Live Science, the giant crack or fissure will separate East Africa from the ‘mother continent’.
As well as splitting Africa in two, this process will likely result in a new ocean emerging between the two landmasses.
The splitting of the continent is related to one of the largest rifts in the world, namely the East African Rift System (EARS).
