Guinness World Records recognizes Victoria Boliviana as the largest species of water lily, largest leaf lily and largest undivided leaf.
This species was recently identified as a distinct species by a research team led by Kew Garden scientific research horticulturist and botanist Carlos Magdalena.
This species has been identified in the Royal Botanic Gardens in London for 177 years.
But before the discovery of a distinct species, the giant water lily was believed to have come from a separate species called Victoria Amazonica.
In doing so the species also set a record as the first new species of giant water lily to be discovered and documented in more than 100 years.
Victoria Boliviana is officially the largest giant water lily in the world.
“The discovery made last year now holds the Guinness World Record title for largest water lily species, largest water lily, largest undivided leaf,” Kew Gardens said in a statement.
The center of the Victoria boliviana lotus leaf can support a weight of up to 79.8 kilograms and can grow and grow to more than 3 meters.
The latest recorded specimen was planted in La Rinconada park in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and has a diameter of 3.19 meters.
