American scientists have discovered the strongest material on Earth. It is a mixture of chromium, cobalt and nickel.
The metallic mixture, CrCoNi, was discovered by researchers by the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Scientists have conducted tests that have shown that the mixture is about five times stronger than the strongest steel. It’s also about fifteen times stronger than the aluminum frame of passenger aircraft.
The material gets stronger in cold weather. This is surprising, because these types of metals often get stronger when heated.
Researchers began experimenting with the blend nearly a decade ago. It took a while to find a place to test the blend. Even forming a research team took years. “Fortunately, the results are worth the wait,” say the researchers.
Scientists warn that the new mixture cannot be used immediately. This requires further research first. “If you are on a plane, do you like the idea that the material to prevent you from falling from a great height was developed just a few months ago? Or do you want the material to be tested a little longer and for us to understand correctly? Here is because it takes years, and sometimes decades, to apply the materials in the real world.”
