The Time and Date website notes that the Earth is able to complete a rotation of 1.59 milliseconds faster or in less than 24 hours. Even so, we residents don’t realize that time passes faster.
Until now it is not known exactly what has caused the Earth to rotate faster in recent years. Furthermore, our planet has broken its record more than 20 times since 2020, in contrast to previous longer years.
The rotation of the Earth is affected by a variety of factors, from its internal structure, the tides of the Moon to climate change. It is also speculated that the fastest rotational speed is caused by the fluctuating motion of the Earth’s geographic poles, known as the “Chandler wobble”.

Matt King, a professor of Earth motion observation at the University of Tasmania, admitted in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that this change had never been seen before.
“Something has changed and we haven’t seen the changes since the dawn of radio astronomy in the 1970s,” he said.
Scientists say that if short days continue to be recorded, this could result in the first second negative leap in Earth’s history. In the past, leap seconds were needed to ensure that time remained stable in the world.
Although Earth has broken a number of records of shorter days, it will be slowed by Earth’s long-term interactions with the Moon. Previous research has predicted that the days will last one minute longer over the next 6.7 million years.
