Scientists Discover More Cells in Human Bodies Than Stars in the Milky Way

[Voice of Hope September 21, 2023](Editor: Li Wenhan) There are more human bodies than stars in the Milky Way! German and Canadian scientists reviewed more than 1,500 scientific papers to reassess the number of cells in adults and children. It was found that the average adult male has 36 trillion cells in his body; while the average adult female has 28 trillion cells. The number of stars in the entire Milky Way may only be about 100 billion.

The British magazine New Scientist reported that the study also found that the mass of small cells (such as blood cells) in the human body is roughly the same as the mass of large cells such as muscle cells (muscle fibers).

The Free Times quoted the report as saying that in order to calculate the number of cells in the human body, scientists from the Max Planck Institutes in Germany determined how many cell types there are in the human body by analyzing more than 1,500 scientific papers. Factors such as how many types of cells are present in each tissue and the average size and quality of each type of cell. They found more than 400 known cell types in 60 different tissues.

The team used data from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), which collated the mass of each tissue in a 70kg adult man, a 60kg adult woman and a 32kg child, to estimate how many cells each body type contains. cell.

Research results show that an adult woman has 28 trillion cells; a child has 17 trillion cells; and an adult male has 36 trillion cells. The study also found that cells have roughly the same mass whether they are very small cells, very large cells or cells in between.

Counting the number of cells in the human body may seem meaningless; but it actually has practical application value in many fields. For example, when building a computer model of the human body, the more precise the number of cells, the higher the accuracy. In addition, this can also help scientists identify the disease and try various possible treatments. Comparing the number of cells in a patient’s organs with that of a normal person may also help doctors diagnose the cause.

The relevant paper was published on the 18th in the internationally authoritative journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” (PNAS).
