Scientists Discover Largest Snake in the World in the Amazon Rainforest

Scientists working in the Amazon rainforest have discovered a species of snake he liked it new, which is rumored to be biggest snake in this world.

Initially, the University of Queensland team went to the Ecuadorian Amazon to search for the previously undocumented northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima). They were invited by the Waorani community to observe the anaconda which was reportedly the largest ever.

The team joined hunters on a 10-day expedition to the Bameno region, before paddling down a river system to find several anacondas hiding in the shallows, waiting for prey. This anaconda is thought to be the largest in the world and they call it the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima).

“The size of this creature is truly extraordinary, one female anaconda we encountered was 6.3 meters long,” said Professor Bryan Fry, a biologist at the University of Queensland, who led the team.

The team also said it had heard vague evidence that a snake measuring 7.5 meters and weighing 500 kilograms had been seen in the area.

The green anaconda is the heaviest snake in the world. The British Museum of Natural History, notes that the heaviest snake ever recorded weighed 227 kilograms. It is 8.43 meters long and 1.11 meters wide. While another species, the reticulated python, tends to be longer, often reaching more than 6.25 meters but is lighter.

Experts studying the creatures found that this identified species of northern green anaconda diverged from the southern green anaconda nearly 10 million years ago, and their genetic differences were 5.5%.

“This is quite significant, as a comparison, humans are only about 2% different from chimpanzees,” said Fry, quoted by detikINET from CNN. These findings are described in the MDPI Diversity journal.

Timitu also warned that Amazon faces many threats. “Deforestation in the Amazon basin due to agricultural expansion is estimated to result in habitat loss of 20-31%, which may impact 40% of the Amazon forest by 2050,” said Fry.

Habitat degradation, forest fires, drought and climate change threaten endangered species such as anacondas, which live in these rare ecosystems.
