BARCELONA Scientist just discovered the brightest object ever observed in the universe, and no, it’s not the Sun. This object, called quasar J0529-4351, is 500 trillion times brighter than our Sun!

As reported by IFL Science, Tuesday (20/2/2024), for comparison, our Sun emits 35.73 octillion lumens, while this quasar emits 17.8 sextillion lumens. Imagine, 500 trillion times brighter!

Discovered by Christian Wolf from the Australian National University in Canberra and his team, this quasar is a very bright active galactic nucleus (AGN). AGNs are highly energetic objects at the center of galaxies, where gas and dust falling into supermassive black holes releases energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

Quasar J0529-4351 was first discovered in 2022, but was only published in the journal Nature Astronomy in the last few days.

This discovery is of great interest to astronomers because it can help them learn more about AGN and galaxy evolution.

Here are some interesting facts about quasar J0529-4351:

Distance: This quasar is located 13.5 billion light years from Earth.

Size: About 1,000 light years in diameter.

Mass: The black hole at the center of this quasar has a mass 40 billion times the mass of the Sun.

Brightness: This quasar emits energy equivalent to 100 trillion Suns.

The discovery of quasar J0529-4351 is an extraordinary discovery and paves the way for further research on these amazing objects.
