Scientists detect storms on Jupiter getting louder

Great Red Spot winds reach speeds of over 644 km/h.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — Hurricane in planet Jupiter moving faster. Storm Great Red Spot Jupiter is probably the most famous storm in the solar system.

The Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project of the American Space Agency (NASA) and the European Space Agency, has recorded an interesting phenomenon. Wind speeds on the site’s “outer lanes” have increased by up to eight percent from 2009 to 2020. Meanwhile, NASA says the deepest winds move much more slowly.

The Great Red Spot’s winds rotate counterclockwise, reaching speeds of over 644 km/h. The storm itself is bigger than Earth. NASA put together a video showing the movement of the wind.

Reported from CNET, Tuesday (28/9), Hubble has been monitoring Jupiter for years. Changes in wind speed may not be noticeable were it not for the sharp eye of the telescope.

“We’re talking about small changes so if you didn’t have 11 years of Hubble data, we wouldn’t know it was happening,” planetary scientist Amy Simon said in a NASA statement Monday. Simon is a co-author of a wind study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Meanwhile, even though the wind was blowing faster, the meaning of the increase in speed was a bit difficult to figure out. Because, Hubble can only collect data about what happens to the top of the cloud. The space telescope cannot see into the depths below.

Michael Wong of the University of California at Berkeley, lead author of the study described the findings as an interesting piece of data that could help us understand what triggers the Great Red Spot and how it retains energy.

The Great Red Spot has long been an object of fascination. Some studies show that the wind appears to be receding.
