Scientists continue to search for the existence of the ninth planet

There is much speculation about the existence of the ninth planet.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Scientists are still looking for signs of the existence of the planet NIne, or ninth planet in the Solar System. Data collected in 1983 showed signs of what British astronomers believed to be evidence that it might be the ninth planet in the solar system.

Astronomer Michael Rowan-Robinson and professor of astrophysica Emeritus at Imperial College London, discovered that data collected by early space telescopes suggested a possible candidate for the ninth planet theory. The data is taken from historical observations made by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), which was launched in 1983. It is the first orbiting observatory to view the entire night sky in the infrared spectrum.

Possible evidence of a ninth planet found in old data. Rowan-Robinson decided to revisit the data from the IRAS ten-month mission to see if there was anything in the data that was still missing.

Rowan-Robinson pays close attention to objects moving slowly between one observation and another. Doing so, allows it to override fast-moving objects, such as comets or asteroids.

Rowan-Robinson says that the planetary candidate’s position shift will occur due to parallax. That’s because the Earth orbits the sun causing the IRAS position to change angle.

Astronomers examine hundreds of sources in the data. However, three observations made in June, July, and September 1983 caught his attention.
